Central Christian Church – 212 North Pleasant Street
Central Christian Church, an historic church in Hillsboro Texas.
The plaque reads: The earliest worship service for local Disciples was conducted on September 11, 1881. Six years later the fellowship was formally chartered with 35 members. Meetings were held in private homes, the courthouse, and the schoolhouse until a sanctuary was built on Waco Street in 1886. After a fire destroyed the structure in 1892 the members rebuilt it here at the current location on Pleasant St.
In 1893 at its new location and new building, the church had 61 members, and membership grew to 128 by 1894. The 1893 frame structure featured gables, a prominent steeple, and stained glass windows set in cathedral-type framing. There were two exterior entrances, two aisles, and three sections of pews.
In 1928 the church building was jacked up and moved over on the lot to enable a basement to be dug. The building was returned and set in place over the basement, and a new brick façade was installed. The current building at Pleasant and Craig is the historic 1893 structure with a major facelift.
The Church has stayed active in support of missions and benevolent organizations. In doing so the church has been a significant institution in the community. Membership has included two missionaries, Nona Boegman and the Rev. Allan Eubank.
