G. D Tarlton House – 211 North Pleasant
This Queen Anne Victorian House, built in 1895 has the honor of being one of the most photographed homes in Hillsboro Texas.
Built in 1895 by attorney Greene Duke Tarlton, from Louisiana. With its hand-carved mantels, stained glass windows, a “speaking tube” between the kitchen and third floor bedroom, and even a dumbwaiter, the home was the finest in town.
It is a large three – story mansion with a wrap around porch on the first level topped by a 2nd story bay window and adjoining balcony over the front entrance portico. The 3rd floor is beautifully highlighted by a square window turret.
Since its construction in 1895, there have been no changes in the general floor plan. Even the original indoor shutters are still in use and a beautiful stained glass window under the stairway remains in place. The impressive home has seven fireplaces, a carriage house and a smokehouse. The historical value of theirs house was recognized in 1972 when it was included as a Texas Historical Landmark.
