Grimes Garage was built in 1918 by Fred O. Grimes. It was a fine example of a first generation filling station with elaborate decorative tile work and a map of the early highway system in Texas painted by Fred Grimes, Jr. The first automobile in Hillsboro arrived in 1905 but prior to this City Fathers were concerned about this new invention and in 1896 set a speed limit of 6 miles per hour with in city limits. Grimes Garage was the first service station to author what we now equate with a full service filling station. Will Rogers once claimed he remembered two things about Texas, the Alamo and the Grimes Garage.
